Overview

Bringing Nickel and Cobalt Refining Back to Brazil

The São Miguel Paulista nickel cobalt refinery is the only nickel cobalt refinery in Latin America and has a 35-year track record of production.

Once in operation, São Miguel Paulista will produce 12,000 metric tonnes of nickel metal each year and 2,000 metric tonnes of cobalt metal each year under the historic and trusted ‘Tocantins’ tradename.

São Miguel Paulista is located in Brazil’s industrial heartland, São Paulo, with access to a skilled local workforce, just over an hour from Brazil’s largest container port, Santos, ensuring efficient logistics and reduced transport costs.

The refinery will operate with low-carbon energy sources, predominantly hydropower, aligning with our commitment to sustainability. In addition, the refinery will operate using 100% reuse water in its industrial processes, reinforcing our commitment to responsible resource management and sustainable operations.

During previous operations, SMP processed nickel and cobalt feedstocks sourced both from mining operations and recycling sources to produce nickel and cobalt electrolytic cathode.  Refined metal was sold to customers in a wide range of industrial applications including batteries for electric vehicles and speciality alloy steel production.
